Weapons taken from SC man returned to attorney

Posted: Updated:
BLUFFTON, SC -

Weapons taken from a former Bluffton resident declared mentally unfit to possess them have been returned.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that Eric Erickson, the attorney for Anthony Valentino, picked up handguns, two rifles and a shotgun from Bluffton police last week.

Police seized the weapons in September after a SWAT team came to Valentino's neighborhood because of fears he was suicidal and could harm others.

A circuit judge ruled later most of the weapons should be returned because the state law that he was unfit applied only to handguns. The judge allowed someone else to possess the handguns. Valentino picked Erickson.

Erickson says he returned the other weapons to one of Valentino's family members. Erickson said his client has since moved out of state.
