SLED getting $900,000 to improve background checks

Posted: Updated:

State law enforcement is receiving $900,000 from the federal government to improve background checks for guns bought in South Carolina.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles announced the grant Friday. The state Law Enforcement Division applied for it after the Legislature passed a law in May meant to prevent mentally ill residents from buying guns.

The money will be used to improve the state's use of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. The federal database is used to verify whether someone attempting to buy a gun can legally own one.

The law was meant to ensure that the names of people who have been declared mentally ill by a South Carolina court or been involuntarily sent to a mental institution go into the database.
