Attacks of September 11, 2001 remembered here in the Lowcountry

Today marks 12 years since the 9/11 attacks on the United States. There are a number of ways you can remember 9/11 here in the Lowcountry.

A ceremony takes place in Beaufort at Waterfront Park on Bay Street at 8:30AM.

Church bells across the city of Charleston will begin tolling at 8:46AM.

The Charleston Fire Department will hold a bell ringing ceremony. That takes place at the Meeting Street Firehouse. The ceremony begins at 9:45AM. The bell will begin ringing at 9:59AM, the time the first tower fell. The bell will ring 343 times, once for each life lost by a member of New York's Fire Department.

At the Citadel, a fragment of steel from the wreckage of the twin towers will be presented to the college today. Members of the New York City Fire Department will present the piece to the Citadel at a ceremony on Summerall Field just before 3:30PM. Two photographic exhibitions of 9/11 will also be on display.

The Goose Creek American Legion Post 166 will hold their annual American Flag disposal ceremony and 9/11 remembrance at 6:00PM at the legion on Howe Hall Road.

A tri-county unity prayer service takes place beginning at 6:30OPM at Phillip Simmons Mall Park.

The Art Institute of Charleston is hosting a number of art-related 9/11 remembrances. The schedule is below:

9:15 am Marjory Wentworth reading a special poem

9:20 am Song performed by trio of students and faculty

9:35 am Comments by Retired USMC Colonel Eddie S. Ray

9:59 am  Performances by Art History students

10:28 am  Begin reading names of those lost by Public Speaking students

5:15 pm Original poems read by Creative Writing/English students; meaningful statistics recited by Math students
