Charleston distracted driving ban passes first reading

Posted: Updated:

Charleston City Council unanimously passed the first reading of a distracted driving ban.

According to Councilman Mike Seekings, the ordinance will ban using a cell phone for anything other than making a phone. The ban will also go beyond just car drivers. It will apply to skateboards, golf cart drivers, bicyclists and any other vehicle on the road, Seekings said.

The ban still has to go through another vote, which is scheduled for October.

Seekings said once the ordinance is passed, the city won't immediately begin enforcement. Officers will work on educating the public about the specifics of the ordinance.

The proposed fine for violating the ban is $100.
