GEORGETOWN, S.C. - Gov. Nikki Haley got a firsthand look at the damage caused by a fire that swept through Georgetown's business district.

The fire that broke out early Wednesday destroyed eight buildings in the city's shopping and dining district along the waterfront. The governor visited Thursday morning.

Haley said she was heartbroken when she heard about the fire and was even more heartbroken Thursday once she saw the damage firsthand.

The governor encouraged South Carolinians to help the people of Georgetown recover from the devastation by donating to the "Front Street Fire Relief Fund."

Donations can be made at any First Citizens Bank and to the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Mayor Jack Scoville says that damages will be in the millions of dollars.

There were no injuries although several pets died.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
