One person is dead after a fatal motorcycle accident Friday night in West Ashley.
According to the Charleston County Sheriff's office, a deputy on I-526W saw a pack of motorcycles traveling at "a high speed of rate." Other deputies spotted the motorcycles on Hwy. 17 and initiated a traffic stop. Three of the motorcycles stopped and four others continued down Wappoo Road toward Edgewater Park. Deputies say two of those motorcycles were stopped near Edgewater Park, but the other two fled a second time.
As the motorcyclists were leaving Edgewater Park, they lost control of their bikes at a sharp turn, crashing near 160 Wappoo Road. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol 20-year-old Beaumont Williams crashed into a tree. EMS transported Williams to the Medical University of South Carolina, where he later died from injuries sustained from the crash. He was not wearing a helmet.
The second driver, 19-year-old Alexander Mock, was thrown off his bike. According to SCHP, Mock was wearing a helmet and did not sustain life-threatening injuries.
