SUMMERVILLE, SC -

The suspect in the murder of a Berkeley County mother and daughter has been arrested.  According to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, 22-year-old Jacob Philip was arrested in Virginia Beach, Va. on unrelated charges and subsequently confessed to the murders of 26-year-old Ashley Kaney and her 8-year-old daughter Riley Burdock.  According to authorities, the deaths were the result of an isolated case of domestic violence.

The arrest was made with the assistance of U.S. NCIS, Virginia Technical College Campus Police, SLED agents and U.S. Marshals.

News 2 has learned that Philip works at the US Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit Charleston. Philip is an active duty member of the US Navy. Philip's rank is Petty Officer 3rd Class.

Lieutenant Commander Victor Garza is the Executive Officer of the Nuclear Power Training Unit Charleston. Earlier, Garza told News 2 his office will support the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office in their investigation. He was not able to release any information about Philip's status at work, or whether or not he has not shown up for work as scheduled.

According to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury, 26-year-old Ashley Kaney and her 8-year-old daughter, Riley Burdick were found in separate beds around noon Tuesday.

A social worker from Sangaree Intermediate School went to 302 Kershaw Road after the little girl had been missing from school for two days.

When no one answered the door, the social worker called the Berkeley County Sheriffs Office. Authorities responded to the home around 11:30 Tuesday morning and found the bodies.

Neighbors were surprised when they heard what happened.

"I've lived here for 23 years, and it's a quiet neighborhood," Paul Thomas said. "It's a very nice neighborhood. We've always felt safe. We never thought something like this would happen next door."

Thomas lives next door to the crime scene. He said that he has seen a few people going in and out of the home but said they mostly kept to themselves.

News 2 has learned that the home's owner has rented out the home. According to public documents, two of the renters are Jacob Philip and Ashley Kaney. Our sister station in Augusta, Ga, WJBF, said that friends have reported that Kaney and her daughter have been missing for two days.

An affiliate station in Knoxville, Tennessee earlier reported that Berkeley County Sheriffs are looking for Philip who may be traveling to Washington or Virginia. Officials initially declined to comment on that report, and did not officially name Philip a suspect until his arrest.

BCSD Superintendent Dr. Rodney Thompson released the following statement in response to the deaths:

"This is an unspeakable tragedy.  On behalf of the district, I offer my condolences, and  our hearts and prayers are with Riley's and Ms. Kaney's loved ones and the entire Sangaree community."
