Sangaree child's absence leads to murder discovery

On Wednesday. Berkeley County's coroner identified the body of a woman and child found dead in their Summerville home. 

Ashley Nicole Kaney, 26, and her daughter Riley Burdock, 8, were killed in their bedrooms.

Suspect arrested after alleged confession to murdered mother, child

Burdick attended Sangaree Intermediate School and had been absent for two days. Tuesday, a social worker was sent to the home to check on the child. However, after receiving no response neighbors insisted authorities come out to the home. According to neighbors on Kershaw Road, the family had filed a missing persons report. Berkeley County Sheriff's Department said a deputy gained access through an open window and found the bodies.

"It's scary I'm a military veteran and I've dealt with some bad stuff but when it comes to children I come unglued because that's the mom in me," Laura Barlow, a nearby neighbor said.

One woman, who did not want to be identified said she had been texting Kaney on Sunday and Monday but never heard back from her.

"We just knew something was wrong."

According to neighbors, the young mother and daughter had been living in the Sangaree neighborhood for less than a year. Kaney's boyfriend, Jacob Philips, also lived in the home.  Philips was arrested in Virginia Beach, Va. late Tuesday night and allegedly confessed to the murders.

Kaney is from Aiken and reportedly worked at The Dive on Joint Base Charleston's Naval Weapons
