Thousands of students will skip the carpool and bus to walk to school instead.

Wednesday is Walk to School Day. Officials with the DOT said there is a record breaking number of schools participating this year.

The purpose of the global event is to teach students about being active, learn pedestrian laws, cut down on traffic and pollution, and help identify safety hazards that may keep kids from walking or biking to school regularly.

Drivers are asked to be alert across the Lowcountry, as there will be hundreds of students on the roads.
