Many oppose Dorchester L.O.S.T. tax

Posted: Updated:

Opinions are mixed in Dorchester County about the new local option sales tax that will be on the ballot November 5.

Under the plan, all retail purchases in Dorchester County will be taxed an additional 1%.

A large portion of that money will be used to give credits to property owners.

John Hull is the chair of the Summerville 9/12 group.

But he also owns a real estate investment company.

He estimates that he would benefit personally with credits of $2,000-$3,000 per year.

However, he says he still opposes the Local Option Sales Tax. "The problem is, it's divide and conquer again. It's not equal treatment under the law. I've got a bunch of tenants here renting these houses that they're going to pay more at the register but they will not get a benefit."

The Local Option Sales Tax will be on the ballot for a vote November 5th.
