A Charleston police officer was killed Saturday morning after wrecking his motorcycle.

According to a police spokesperson, as Sergeant Tony Person, Jr. was riding his motorcycle in the area of Trump Road and Dorchester Road, a car pulled into his path.

After swerving, Sgt. Person hit the back of that car and then was hit by another vehicle.

Sgt. Person had been with the Charleston Police Department for more than 13 years, according to officials.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley said Sgt. Person was one of the most respected officers.

"We have 454 police officers, and he was really one of our very best," Mayor Riley said by phone Sunday. "We feel overwhelming sadness. Officer Person was a very fine police officer and just a very well-rounded, highly regarded leader."

To mourn the loss of Sgt. Person, the flag was flown at half-staff Sunday at the police department. Many also changed their Facebook profile pictures to an image symbolizing support for fallen officers.

Sgt. Person's Facebook is filled with pictures of his motorcycle and his young daughter. Mayor Riley said he was known as a family man.

"It's just such a sad event for the police department family," Mayor Riley said. "Our hearts certainly go out to his family."

Sgt. Person was currently assigned to serving the area of West Ashley. During his career, he worked with Central Investigations and was a member of the department's Explosive Device Unit.

Mayor Riley said no matter what the job was, Sgt. Person always exceeded.

"He has done lots of different jobs within our police department, and each time did them with great excellence and commitment to service," he said.

Police Chief Greg Mullen also released a statement which said:

The department is in shock from the news about the death of Sergeant Tony Person.  We are mourning the loss of a dedicated police officer, father, and friend who will be dearly missed by everyone.  Tony served the Department and community with honor, dedication, and humility.

Mayor Riley said Sunday that funeral arrangements have not been set.
