New named storm, Melissa, poses no threat to the United States

Posted: Updated:

The 13th named storm of the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Melissa, poses no threat to the United States and will race quickly to the north over the open Atlantic through the weekend.

"Melissa has max winds around 65 MPH and could be near hurricane strength over the next day or two before making the transition to a non-tropical low late in the week," said Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Josh Marthers.

Melissa, currently a sub-tropical storm, will produce hazardous shipping conditions and a large wind field over the open Atlantic through the weekend.
