The Effingham County Sheriff's Office says Highway 17 near Guyton remains closed this morning, after a fiery tanker crash Thursday afternoon. Officials confirm three people died in the crash.

"Preliminary reports show that a Ford Truck struck a tanker truck which was traveling South on Ga. 17 at Marlow Road," Effingham County spokesman David Ehsanipoor said.

"The Ford truck was occupied by two teenagers and a small child. Effingham County Sheriff's deputies, Georgia State Troopers and the Effingham County Coroner have tentatively identified the occupants in the Ford truck as Wesley Mulligan, 18, Garrett Mulligan, 16, and Eli Hickox, 3 years of age, from Guyton, Georgia," Ehsanipoor said.

An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah.

The crash remains under investigation but charges are not expected to be filed against the driver of the tanker truck.

As news of the siblings death spread through the community, donation pages began to emerge. WSAV has not independently verified the authenticity of this donation page, however.

"Three bodies have been recovered from the Ford truck to include on of which appears to be a small child," Ehsanipoor said. Investigators have been sifting through the wreckage all morning.

An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah.

Detour Information:

Georgia DOT maintenance engineers have completed a damage assessment of the roadway affected by the crash on S.R. 17 yesterday in Effingham County. The length of damaged roadway is approximately 100 yards. The closed section of US 17 has decreased in length which is now from Falagan Street to Old Marlow Road. GDOT crews will be milling out the damaged asphalt then inlay new asphalt and repair shoulders of the roadway. If weather permits work to be completed, the estimated time of reopening this section of S.R. 17 is Monday evening.

Detour route will be signed as:

Motorists traveling on S.R. 17 southbound will be detoured in Guyton onto S.R.119 north toward Springfield; turn right onto S.R. 21South; Turn on to SR 30 traveling back to S.R. 17

Officials expect the stretch of Highway 17 to be closed at least until Monday afternoon.

WSAV.com has crews assigned to continuing coverage of this story.
