South Carolina lottery hits major milestone

Posted: Updated:

From the lowcountry to the upstate and everywhere in between, you may have heard of at least one person winning a major jackpot here in South Carolina.

The S.C. Education Lottery on Tuesday reported the 100th winning ticket worth $1 million or more had been sold.

The Lottery's Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea calls the milestone, "wonderful not only for the lucky winners, but for the Lottery, its retailers and the State of South Carolina."

Powerball®, Mega Millions®, scratch-offs, raffles, and second-chance drawings for prizes produced 100 millionaires in our state.

Prize money won by 100 millionaires totaled more than $1 billion. Seven won Powerball® jackpots.

Retailers won too, earning nearly $1 million in commissions when the tickets were claimed and the state benefited from $70 million in taxes withheld from the winnings.

The first ticket was sold ten years ago when an $88 million jackpot-winning Powerball® ticket was bought in Fort Mill, and the 100th this month on a Powerball® ticket sold in Lexington.

In total, lottery players in South Carolina have won more than $7 billion in prizes since the games began in 2002.
