Cool School: Hanahan Elementary School

Posted: Updated:
CHARLESTON, SC -

Awards and community support, Hanahan Elementary has plenty of both. We're in Berkeley county for our Cool School of the week.

Hanahan Elementary is a neighborhood school with 11-hundred students in pre-k through fourth grade, a Palmetto Gold and Silver award winning school with excellent ratings for several years. The "A" rated school has had 100-percent PTA participation for more than thirty years. The school is proud of it's student operated newscast, WHES.

School leaders say they have a tradition of excellence and have some of the highest test scores in the district and the state, and their success is based on a good partnership between students, teachers, and parents. Principal Tom Sparkman says, "We've got a good school community partnership. Our community is great, very supportive, civic minded, and we always work well together. I think that's what makes us a Cool School."

Kindergarten student Katherine McCarthy says, "We have great teachers. They're great because they learn us new things." Fourth grade student Foster Nicodin says, "They will never give up helping you. They will keep helping you until you get it." Teacher Alyce Kennedy says, "We have awesome students here. I look forward to coming to school every single day and working with these kids. Their parents are superb. They support our kids and support our school just beautifully, and then my colleagues, the people I work with, my administration. They have one thing in mind and that is doing the best they can do for these kids." "We have really nice teachers and if you need help with something.. they're wiling to go back and just help you with whatever you need, and we have so many kids and volunteers and it works out great," says fourth grade student Elleson-Anne Rainsford. Assistant principal Katie Taie says, "We are a huge family. We have the absolute best teachers here. They are dedicated. They are motivated, and they are always going the extra mile to help our students. We also have wonderful community and parental involvement. You can not walk down these halls without seeing adults working with students."

Hanahan Elementary has several clubs: motivated young men and women, running club, chorus, robotics.

The school's Relay for Life team has consistently raised more than 8-thousand-dollars every year since 2005. They also raise money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we'll tell you about the vital role the City of Hanahan and other volunteers play at the school.

We want to hear about the good things going on at your school. send an email to octavia at omitchell@wcbd.com, maybe your school will be the next Cool School of the week.
