Hagan fight to get longterm unemployment insurance reinstated

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -
Since lawmakers chose to defer millions in federal unemployment benefits, Congress is rerouting the money to other states. That’s why some say they’re stepping in.
9 On Your Side spoke to Senator Kay Hagan via satellite. She says she is working to restore the benefits lawmakers in Raleigh ended.
The Senate passed a measure that would reinstate North Carolina’s eligibility for the funds; it is part of a broader bill to extend the federal program.

Hagan blames lawmakers in Raleigh and says the state is suffering from their reckless actions. "We're the only state in the nation where our legislature cut off our long term unemployed citizens from receiving this federal safety net….Our federal tax payer dollars are also going to 49 other states and not to people in North Carolina."
Governor Pat McCrory and his party say they didn't renew the benefits because they had borrowed too much from the feds to pay for the benefits and say they are trying to shift the focus from unemployment to reemployment.
