Berkeley Electric Cooperative restores power to more than 8,000 customers

Posted: Updated:

Losing power is certainly the biggest problem from this winter storm in Berkeley County.

More than 10,000 Berkeley Electric Cooperative customers have experienced a power outage. Fortunately more than 8,000 customers have had their power restored.

Going through that process is not fun.

Jinaris Rhames are her family are one of thousands who lost power Wednesday. "It's just cold, especially when you are totally electric. It's just hard."

She said her family was prepared, but there are things you want to make sure you have if the power goes out. "Make sure you have batteries, candles, matches or a lighter. Make sure everything's charged up. Cell phones and everything, cause my daughter was trying to charge her cell phone with my laptop, and I didn't know you could do that. It's pretty cool."

Eddie McKnight with Berkeley Electric Cooperative says their crews are working with crews called in from across the state to fix the problem. "At this point, we're not sure that everyone will be back on this evening, but our crews are working. Some were timed out due to length of time they worked to go home and get some rest. We hope to get everyone back on, and we're trying hard."

Jinaris says she is confident Berkeley Electric will get her power restored soon. "They're gonna take care of us. We're gonna have lights on soon. They good, they good."
