NC man facing several charges in double fatal hit-and-run in Garner

GARNER, N.C. -

A 21-year-old man from Kure Beach is facing several charges, including two counts felony death by motor vehicle, in connection with a double-fatal hit-and-run on Interstate 40 near U.S. 70 in Garner Thursday night, highway patrol said.

Around 8 p.m. Thursday, a bobtail tractor trailer, driven by Cardell Gayfield, hit a patch of ice and spun out of control while traveling westbound on I-40 near U.S. 70, Sgt. Jeff Gordon said. Two other westbound vehicles drove into a roadside ditch while trying to avoid the trailer.

Gordon said another tractor trailer, driven by Larry Kepley, 39, of Winston-Salem, stopped and was attempting to assist Gayfield when he was struck by a Volvo and killed, Gordon said.

Kepley worked for N.S. Farrington, a delivery service company. One of Kepley's coworker's sad they are deeply saddened by the news. Kepley had  been with the company for almost three years and always offered to fill in and never missed a day of work, the coworker said.

The owner of N.S. Farrington has been in contact with Kepley's family.

"He always seemed to go above and beyond what was asked for him to do, and that was exemplary of what he stopped to do to help someone in distress," a coworker said of Kepley.

The Volvo also hit a driver of the vehicle stuck in the ditch. The driver, identified as Nathaniel Williams, 34, of Hope Mills, was sent to WakeMed for treatment where he later died. Gordon said Williams was in the United State Navy.

Gordon said it was believed that Williams walked up the embankment to assist Kepley and Gayfield when he was hit.

The driver of the Volvo, 21-year-old Marshall Doran, fled the scene and went into the woods, said Gordon. The Wake County Sheriff's Office later located Doran and he was arrested by Raleigh police. According to an arrest report, Doran was arrested at 1999 Trailwood Drive and Lineberry Drive in Raleigh.

Doran is charged with two felony counts of death by motor vehicle, DWI, felony possession of amphetamines, resisting an officer, two counts of felony hit-and-run and reckless driving. He was processed and is being held under a $5 million bond.

Doran's bond was reduced to $501,000 Friday afternoon and was appointed a public defender. 

Doran's first court appearance  is expected Friday at 2 p.m.
