Palmetto Christian Academy students extend helping hands around the world

Posted: Updated:
Palmetto Christian Academy, an outreach ministry of East Cooper Baptist Church strives to make an impact on surrounding communities, and communities around the globe. We're in Mount Pleasant for our Cool School of the week.

Helping those in need is at the heart of Palmetto Christian Academy. Lower School Principal Wendy Putnam says, "We are pleased to partner with Camp Brittney, a ministry located in Costa Rica, founded by a PCA family."

Camp Brittney is a residential camp for impoverished children in Costa Rica. PCA sends students to serve at the camp several times a year.

Putnam says, "For the last six or seven years, we have taken students down to Camp Brittney. Groups from as small as nine to as large as 32. We've taken our kindergartner, we've also taken our seniors. We also have repeat visitors, and it's really here where students get to be the hands and feet of Christ, something we teach them about, but until they're on the ground and actually able to flush that out, it becomes much more real and personal to them."

To serve the camp, Palmetto Christian Academy designates February as "Heart for Missions Month." They collect money for Camp Brittney, and welcome missionaries from around the world to speak to students. Over the past six years, PCA has raised more than 47-thousand-dollars to support Camp Brittney. "Whether it be visiting orphanages, or assisting at camps, we have helped out at special needs schools, we have visited a number of places, and delivered food to the homeless, and the needy. It's a blessing to be a part of this ministry."

Senior Morgan Cox is preparing to make her third trip to Costa Rica over spring break. This time, she's taking her father along. "The kids just come with open arms. They just want love, and we just go over there and show them love, show them the love of Jesus, and wrap my arms around them, and speak a little bit of spanish that we can. It's an amazing experience, something that has touched me and showed me how blessed I am."

From Water Missions International, to Camp Sunshine, to ministering to the homeless, students give of themselves to help transform lives, here at home and around the world. Senior Jackson Pearce says, "Just taking your resources, and going out and really becoming a changer of the world, I can go out. I don't sit by idle and watch the world affect people. I go out into the world and really use what I've learned to make the world a better place."

Community service is top priority at PCA. Twenty hours per year for high school students is required for graduation.

Coming up Friday on News 2 Today, we'll present Palmetto Christian Academy with our Cool School award.

We want to hear about the good things going on at your school. send an email to octavia at omitchell@wcbd.com, maybe your school will be the next cool school of the week.
