Suspect arrested for allegedly strangling Briana Rabon to death

Elgin, SC - The Kershaw County coroner said 18-year-old Briana Rabon whose body was found in some woods near Elgin earlier this week had been strangled.

According to The State newspaper, Friday night Kershaw County deputies arrested 21-year-old Stephen Ross Kelly of Lugoff in the killing. Rabon, a Lugoff-Elgin High School graduate was found dead on a dirt road near Elgin on Wednesday.

Kelly is at the Kershaw County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing, Sheriff Jim Matthews plans to hold a news conference Saturday morning. 


Services for Rabon will be held Sunday at Sawney's Creek Baptist church in Ridgeway.

Some children playing on a dirt road near Elgin found the girl's body Wednesday afternoon. Officials say they are not sure where she was killed.

The sheriff said a missing persons report was filed on the teen as investigators were at the location where her body was found. The teen's car was found at a restaurant at US 601 and Interstate 20.
