Cool School: Cainhoy Elementary Middle School

Posted: Updated:

Cainhoy Elementary Middle School continues to make academic gains, and has strong community support. We're in Berkeley county for our Cool School of the week.

Cainhoy Elementary Middle School is a small rural school with 345 students in head-start through 8th grade. The school is located in Huger and is surrounded by the Francis Marion National Forest.

The Title One school has Palmetto Gold and Silver awards, and has made Adequate Yearly Progress AYP three years in a row. Cainhoy Elementary Middle School promotes high academic standards in an environment of student-centered, technology enhanced instruction. The school offer honors courses as well, and has four state of the art computer labs, smart boards in all classrooms, and opportunities for interactive learning with the use of IPads. Principal John Spagnolia says the school's success is a true example of student, staff, and community working together to achieve excellence. Mr. Spagnolia says, "Very strong academic gains, which we are very proud. I give all the accolades to our parents and grand parents, and aunts and uncles for helping on the outside when the children get home, and our faculty and staff here within the school, and of course the most important piece of that three way puzzle is the students. They take heart to that and shown us they can do it academically."

Fifth grade student Makayla Grant says, "I have a cool school because this school helps us improve and makes our grades go higher." Seventh grade student Dylan Berry says, "I get to walk into school Monday through Friday knowing my teachers are always there and friends are always there to support me." Social Studies teacher Sylvia Williams says, "There are so many things that make Cainhoy a Cool School. It's just a great place to be. It's the feeling of family, the connection of community, also that everybody is on the same page here as far as educating our students and preparing them for prayerfully bright futures. It makes a great place to work."

A student support program is available through an intervention mentor program designed to promote positive behavior. Students in middle school have an after school tutorial program.

Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we'll take a closer look at the school's strong community and business partners support.

We want to hear about the good things going on at your school. Send an email to Octavia at omitchell@wcbd.com, maybe your school will be the next Cool School of the week.
