UPDATE: Girl who shaved head to support friend, can return to class despite "dress" code

Posted: Updated:

A child's act of support for a friend fighting cancer got her banned from her school.

Now after a lot of backlash on social media, she's being allowed back at school.  Tuesday night, the board of the charter school voted to allow Kamryn Renfro back permanently, shaved head and all.

Her friend, Delaney Clements, age 11, has a type of cancer called neuroblastoma. She's been getting chemotherapy which makes her hair fall out.

Delaney's best friend Kamryn decided to shave her head to show support.

Clements said, "It made me feel very special and that I'm not alone."

The friendly deed was admired by many but the school she attends, Caprock Academy, a charter school in Grand Junction, Colorado, has an appearance policy she was violating.

According to a statement made by the school's board of directors, the school has a detailed dress code and shaved heads are not allowed.

The girl's mother took to social media - and received a lot of feedback from parents like Corrina Shirley who said, "She didn't shave her head to be a part of a gang or to be a rebel, she shaved her head to show her friend that she wasn't alone."

The board of directors says they sometimes make exceptions to the dress code and this is one of those exceptions.
