GAFFNEY, S.C. -

It's a new twist on an old scam. Bogus phone calls using the same scare tactic... Claiming police will arrest you if you don't pay up.

This time they are targeting renters, claiming you are overdue.

When Tommy Skipper got the call, he had logic on his side.

"They said I had to get out of my apartment in less than 24 hours or they were going to send the police. I knew it was a red flag off the get-go, I said I ain't live in an apartment, I live in a home."

He's owned this house for 18 years, but Skipper is worried scammers may fool renters into thinking they may get arrested.

We asked Lt. Tony Ivey with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office whether police or deputies ever show up at a home for someone who owes money.

"No that is a civil matter that's handled through the civil process or court, sheriff's office deals primarily with criminal aspects. And we are not a collection agency," said Ivey.

A word of caution, even if you would never fall for a scam like this, fight the urge to call back any unrecognizable number. Some of those scams have been associated with putting bogus charges on your cell phone bill."

Skipper says the scammer even tried to change their story.

"They said I got less than 24 hours, I need to pay my bills, I'm going to send the police, and I said well bring them on," said Skipper.

Scammers may play on your fears. But knowing the truth will keep you from becoming a victim.
