Timber fall out from recent ice storms

Posted: Updated:
Moncks Corner, SC - As the clean up continues around the Low Country from ice storms this year...  a local timber producer in Moncks Corner is reeling from the fall out of those storms.

Officials at Mepkin Abbey say that their timber industry creates a large source of income for the $1 million budget they have to run at the monastery.

During the recent ice storms, they say they had about $25,000 worth of damage to the 1000 acre pine plantation there.
They say the timber wasn’t the only thing affected.

The oak trees on the grounds there also took a hit with falling limbs.   Robbie Metts, is with Mepkin Abbey, he says "This particular project cost mepkin around $15,000. That $15,000 was not budgeted but it was you know something we have to do to maintain the aesthetics of Mepkin."

SC-DOT estimates that over $360 million in damage was done during those ice storms in the timber industry around South Carolina.

They say over 1.5 million forestland acres were affected in 24 counties.
