Stall High School evacuated for possible gas leak

Posted: Updated:
Stall High School in North Charleston was evacuated for a possible gas leak on Friday morning.

According to CCSD officials, the school was evacuated just before 8:00 am after someone noticed the smell of natural gas. No injuries were reported.

A large field trip was scheduled for some 900 students. District officials said it couldn't have been scheduled at a better time, since some 700 students left the the school's campus and headed out to a local movie theater.

North Charleston Police Dept, North Charleston Fire Department, SCEG and the CCSD Office of Security and Emergency Management were on scene and helped assessed the situation.

Crews left after an hour of inspection but not before shutting off the gas lines to the campus.

School officials said students would be allowed to return to campus after their field trip and the school has a lunch protocol to follow in these situations.

Fortunately, say school officials, they have the weekend and all of next week to determine the source of the problem. Spring break kicks off this afternoon.
