If you have a state refund check coming and you filed your taxes well over 3 weeks ago, you may want to check for errors in your return.

The State Department of Revenue says some people who used Turbo Tax have had issues that are slowing down their refunds.

hen Katie Bradley did her taxes 2 months ago she was pretty excited to see a nearly $3500 dollar state refund.

"I was surprised, I was happy, I thought wow, vacation this year!"

She filed electronically and waited.

"They tell you if you filed online, 3 weeks. So when it became 4 weeks, 5 weeks, 6 weeks, I said there's a problem," she said.

Bradley called the State Department of Revenue. She learned her state refund from last year had somehow appeared in a line 17. That indicated it had been applied to paying this year's taxes.

"She said this has been a very common error on our returns for South Carolinians who filed with Turbo Tax," said Bradley.

How common? The state wouldn't tell us exactly but spokeswoman Jean Funches did say:

"We have been advised that there is an unclear question on the software. Any returns with this issue would be identified through return processing. But, we are unaware of how many taxpayers may have been affected."

We called Turbo Tax for answers.

Spokesman Bob Meighan says Bradley's file showed she mis-entered. Bradley doesn't recall that and thinks there may have been a glitch. Either way, Turbo Tax took action so it wouldn't happen again.

"The state informed us that they're seeing some some returns that incorrectly were showing the refund amount as also being applied to estimated tax payments so we broke the screens up into smaller granular pieces to hopefully eliminate any confusion," said Meighan.

Bradley says, no matter who is at fault, she doesn't want other tax payers refunds to be delayed.

"I wanted people to know that possibly their returns could have errors and you need to call."

The state says it takes 3 weeks to get your return. So if it goes much longer, you may want to contact the SC Department of Revenue to make sure your return is error free.
