Buon Giorno from Rome, Italy where our News2 Viewer trips continues! It was on to Vatican City today for a tour of the Vatican Museum, St. Peter's Basilica, and of course, the world famous Sistine Chapel.

Our guide for this tour was Phillipo, a very knowledgeable and passionate young man. He told us story after story about the who's and when's of all things Vatican. There is no way I could write down everything he said, especially since there was not time to write, and take pictures. As you might imagine, this is a special place, and this thousands of tourists from all over the world visit here. This morning was no different!

We started in the museum, where many works of arts are housed, including beautiful frescoes and tapestries, many depicting the origin of Christianity. I know we are very proud of our history in Charleston, going back to even the 1600's. Here, it's not uncommon to hear the designation B.C. Before many of the displays, paintings, monuments, and  sculptures!

The Sistine Chapel is nothing short of amazing, and in silence, you can enjoy Michelangelo's most amazing work. Phillipo did spend time before briefing us on the paintings on the ceiling, so we had a great idea what to look for. One interesting fact...Michelangelo did initially have everyone person in the pairings naked, but years later, the Catholic Church felt that was not a good example, and commissioned other artists to add some sort of clothing to each figure. Now, restrictions have been loosened, and some are clothed, and some are not. It's always great to have a local guide to give us those little nuggets of information!

While in the Sistine Chapel, there is silence, and no pictures allowed. It was quite moving to say the least!

We also got to see exactly where the Conclave is held each time a new Pope is selected.

After the Chapel, we spent time (with many other tour groups) roaming St. Peter's Square. It is Holy Week, and thousands of chairs are set up in advance of the appearance by the Pope this weekend. It is a beautiful place, and probably a once in a lifetime experience to see for members of our group!

Wednesday, it's on to the Colosseum, and the ruins in this ancient city.

Hope you are enjoying the photos we are sending back!

Arrivederci!
