A Sarasota man was sentenced to a year in county jail after being found guilty of animal cruelty charges after he poured hot sauce over a 3-month-old puppy.

Thursday, Ephrian Myles, 47,  pleaded no contest. Circuit Judge Donna Berlin also ordered him to serve 18 months of probation and to complete an anger management course. He's also been ordered not to live in a home with a pet.

Myles' girlfriend took the dachshund-chihuahua mix to a nearby fire department where they washed off the hot sauce. The pup's eyes were swollen shut and the sauce had gotten into its throat.

The puppy, named Gizmo, apparently has a history of seizures.  The girlfriend said Myles became irate during one of its seizures.

Gizmo is expected to make a full recovery.
