GOOSE CREEK, SC - A once abandoned shopping center in Goose Creek is now less than two weeks away from opening as a new business.

Plantation Square Shopping Center sat empty for the past 10 years. It became home to vandals.

Elizabeth Darnell is the owner of Shear Perfection Salon and Day Spa, which is located right next to Plantation Square. "We have been here three years. And when we came ,it was vandalized and just really an eyesore to the community."

Last November, groundbreaking for a renovation took place after the property was purchased by a new owner. Now it looks a lot better, and will soon open as a Universal Storage facility.

Darnell says that's good news. "We hope that it'll really make this area look a lot better. Because Crowfield's a very nice area."

Owner Albert Heyward says this is a long-term dream of his that eventually will include a new building on the front of the property with some small business storefronts. "This has been a, we've been working on it, I personally have been working on it, over eight years."

He said they overcame many obstacles to buying and renovating the property. "We had a terrific time trying to find the bank financing that we needed to have. And finally, a bank saw what we were doing and saw the vision that we had for the property. It was Ameris Bank."

In addition to the construction jobs the project has already created, Heyward says they will be hiring three people to operate the business.

A grand opening, including games for the kids, a food truck and more than 100 cars in a car show happens May 10th from 9am to 4pm. The groundbreaking takes place at 11am.
