SAVANNAH, GA -

A Baxley man charged with killing his wife while their child slept in the next room has pleaded guilty to the crime.

Jonathan Courson originally told investigators his wife, Mandy, was killed during a home invasion back in January of 2013.

Authorities told News 3 at the time that two black men broke into the family's Corey Street home, tied the couple up, ransacked the house and at some point killed 28 year old Mandy.

But within days, Jonathan Courson, who was 26 at the time, was identified as the primary suspect in the case and less than a week later, was charged with his wife's murder.

Jonathan and Mandy Carter Courson had a daughter, who was just a toddler at the time of the murder.

Courson was later indicted on eight charges including murder and insurance fraud.

He allegedly went to his insurance agent three days after his wife's death and asked how he could collect on a life insurance policy.

Courson has been held without bond since his arrest.

This afternoon, Courson pleaded guilty to the crime and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole, according to Sheriff Benny Deloach.
