Summerville's Kelley named 2014 District Teacher of the Year

Posted: Updated:
Summerville High School teacher Alice F. Kelley was named the 2014 District Teacher of the Year Thursday night for Dorchester School District II.

Kelley, a science and engineering teacher at Summerville High School, was selected from 28 others teachers from the district and was honored at a celebration held at Ashley Ridge High School.

Kelley began  as a science teacher at Summerville High in 2000 and was named the Rookie Teacher of the Year.  Last year she took over the engineering department with a goal to increase student enrollment in the program, particularly female students.  The program grew from 150 students to 350 and the number of females increased from 8 to 52.  Kelley also established the STEM Academy at Summerville High.

Alice Kelley has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a Master of Social Work from U. of South Carolina, and will receive  a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from The Citadel this summer.

Kelley says teaching is a great movie of life with all the criteria one wants to see in a great movie present in day-to-day teaching.
