Cool School: H.E. Bonner Elementary

Posted: Updated:
H.E. Bonner Elementary is a neighborhood school located in the Macedonia community of rural Berkeley county. We're in Moncks Corner for our Cool School of the week.

Bonner Elementary is a Title One school serving 800 students in pre-K3 to 5th grade. The school has a family atmosphere and pulls from eight different surrounding communities.

Bonner has received Palmetto Silver awards, and arts awards as well. The school is proud of it's school news room, which Octavia got a chance to sample during her visit..

Principal Natalie Lockliear says Bonner Elementary is an enthusiastic and inventive arts infused school that remains focused on teaching through the arts and exposing students to a wide range of different art forms. Lockliear says, "We always say Bonner is Berkeley county's hidden secret. We're out here in the forest and we really have our kids are just awesome. We have a great staff. We're kind of unique in the sense too a lot of our teachers grew up here, went to school here and returned here to teach. We actually have a lot of kids parents went to school here." Fifth grade student Luke Morris says, "We have a Cool School because we have school dances, safety patrol, news crew." "All of our teachers are very nice and they have fun ways of helping us learn," says fifth grade student Mackenzie Cannon. Four-year-old pre-k teacher Stacy Shrum says, "We have our great arts integration program, and we have great parent involvement with that. They like coming out here and seeing what we're doing, and they're really supportive of every decision we make in the classroom."

Bonner has seven computer labs. Students have access to I-pads, Kindle Fires, and Net Books.

Bonner is proud of it's parenting initiatives. The school has events and programs for parents through out the year, and receive strong participation.

Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we'll tell you about Bonner's art integration program and the Academy of Arts.

We want to hear about the good things going on at your school. Send an email to Octavia at omitchell@wcbd.com, maybe your school will be the next Cool School of the week.
