Cool School: Angel Oak Elementary

Posted: Updated:
They're a small school with a large support system, named after a historic tree on Johns Island. Angel Oak Elementary is our Cool School of the week.

Angel Oak Elementary is a small diverse community school with 402 students in child development through 5th grade. Angel Oak has received Palmetto Silver awards in the past. The school was originally named St. John's Elementary and was changed to Angel Oak Elementary after the Angel Oak Tree, which is 14-hundred years old.

Students use the latest technology, including Ipads. The Race to the Top School also offers yoga instruction for students. Principal Jennifer Baez

says, "Angel Oak is a Cool School because of the students and teachers we have here. Everybody pulls together and works together for the goal of educating students, and they go above and beyond to make sure we do the programs, we have the resources, and we expose kids to the things we know that will impact them in the future. Third grade student Daniel Hernandez says, "We got talent, and the community gave us a garden and my job when we're going to recess i have ti water the plant when we go out to the greenhouse." Fourth grade student Shania Allen says, "Angel Oak Elementary is a Cool School because they have nice technology, nice teachers, and a very wonderful principal." "We have so many different programs going on for our students as far as wellness and healthy initiatives. We have an outdoor garden that we're working on, outside classroom they're able to enjoy, especially as the Spring comes around, and it gets sunnier they're able to go out there and learn," says teacher Catheryne Porter.

Angel Oak is proud of it's arts program, which includes a partnership with Robert Ivy Ballet, and 5th grade strings program.

Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, a look at the community's outpouring of support for the school.

We want to hear about the good things going on at your school. Send an email to Octavia at omitchell@wcbd.com, maybe your school will be the next Cool School of the week.
