Man beaten by woman with bat, dies in hospital police say

NICHOLS, SC (WBTW) - Two people are in jail following an assault that turned deadly in Horry County over the weekend.

According to a press release, Horry County police officers were called Saturday morning to a home on Willoughby Road. near Nichols in reference to an assault. When they arrived, they located a male victim with what appeared to be a large amount of trauma to the head. The victim was taken to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.

Detectives learned that after a verbal altercation between the victim and Santana Waitous Goff, 22 of Nichols, a physical fight occurred where the victim was assaulted.

After the assault, Gearlene Boutista Delarosa, 51, of Nichols did grab an aluminum baseball bat and hit the victim several times in the head.

Both suspects were arrested and taken to the J. Reuben Long Detention Center; where they were charged in connection with the incident.


Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick said the victim, Jerome Bessent, 60, of Mullins died Monday morning from injuries sustained in the attacked.

Delarosa is now charged with Voluntary Manslaughter. Goff is charged with accessory after the fact.
