Coast Guard crews continue search for missing SC kayaker

Coast Guard crews, and partner agencies continue the search for a missing kayaker in the vicinity of John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, in Dania Beach, Florida Saturday.


Missing is, David Lemonds a 47-year-old male, an Aiken, South Carolina resident.

Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Miami received a report at approximately 9:45 A.M. Friday from the National Park Service rangers in John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, of a possible missing kayaker. Lemonds' truck was spotted in the parking lot overnight with no signs of Lemonds returning to it. Several local kayakers in the area were questioned and it was determined that Lemond was last been seen at approximately 11 A.M. Thursday leaving in a 12-foot yellow ocean kayak.

Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale, Florida, boatcrews and Coast Guard Cutter William Flores crewmembers were launched to search the area. A MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter crew, an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Miami and a C-130 aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Florida launched to search an area from Dania Beach to Riviera Beach, Florida.

In total, Coast Guard search-and-rescue crews have searched 5,314 square nautical miles at this time.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission along with John U. Lloyd Beach State Park Rangers searched the park Friday with negative results of finding Lemonds.

Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of Lemonds is asked to contact Coast Guard watchstanders at 305-415-6800.

The Coast Guard Cutter William Flores is a 154-foot fast response cutter, homeported in Miami Beach, Florida.
