SAVANNAH, GA - The husband and father who is linked to the death of the mother of his 2 children had a background in domestic violence spanning back 18 years, according to media sources.

Lauren S. Brown Smart, age 34, who had just given birth recently to her second child, a boy, was found dead in her Wilmington Island home near Savannah on Saturday. Wilmington Island is just over the SC line and off the coast of Savannah.

Her husband, Norman Smart, also 34, was charged with  aggravated assault, domestic violence – for now. He is being held without bond after reporting that his wife was not breathing in their Walthour Road home about 9 a.m. Saturday

Smart teared up during Monday's arraignment hearing, as he learned he was denied bond by a Chatham County judge.

Lauren Smart's family was also in tears.

When Lauren Smart was found dead in her home this weekend, her husband was still inside their home.

It all started when police were called to the family's home on Walthour Road Saturday morning.

Inside they found the body of 34 year old Lauren Smart.

“This young sweet hard working Mommy (also mother of a new baby boy) was killed,” a writer for the Tybee Breeze newspaper wrote on Facebook.

“She had a strong bright presence, studied criminal justice … and loved being a Mom. She helped me with some projects down on Tybee.”

The police report says officers found Lauren on the ground, on her back, with minor abrasions on her forehead, arms and elbows and blood stains on the carpet nearby.

Norman Smart is no stranger to the law, or domestic violence.

WSAV-TV has learned he has three previous domestic violence charges, all of which he pleaded guilty to. Norman Smart has a record of similar charges in Akron, Ohio starting in 1996, WJCL-TV reported.

Norman Smart spent 9 months in an Ohio prison for a domestic violence arrest in 2007.

He was sentenced to another 76 days behind bars after pleading guilty to domestic violence.

That was the third time he'd made a guilty plea since 2005.

An autopsy is being done on Lauren Smart to determine the exact cause of death.

After that is finished, police could upgrade the assault charge to murder.
