Friday the 13th plus a full moon

Posted: Updated:
Selenophobic describes people who fear the moon. Friggatriskaidekaphobia is fear of Friday the 13th. If you're afraid of both, you may want to keep things simple on June 13 when both occur.

It hasn't happened for nearly a century, and it won't happen again until Aug. 13, 2049.

The fear of Friday the 13th dates back to medieval times, when it seemed like hangings and executions always fell on Fridays. Then there are those who say the number 13 derives from the 13 people who attended the last supper of Jesus.

Friday the 13th isn't unlucky for everyone. Kalamazoo resident Kendall Warren won a $27 million jackpot in the Michigan Lottery on Friday, May 13, 2011.

Some believe that the moon's gravitational pull makes people behave oddly or makes them more prone to accidents. Scientists say the Earth's gravitational forces are much stronger though.

The June full moon is nicknamed the "Strawberry Moon" in part because it's strawberry season and the full moon traditionally coincided with the harvest during the time of the Algonquin Native Americans.
