Coast Guard searches after unmanned, drifting boat found near Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coast Guard is seeking information on a boat that was spotted by a passing mariner unmanned and adrift 30 miles southeast of Charleston Sunday.

The good Samaritan notified watchstanders in the Sector Charleston command center at 5:44 p.m. he saw a 14 to 15-foot yellow McKee Craft center-console boat drifting with the engine in the up position and no one aboard 30 miles southeast of Charleston.

Anyone with any information about the boat is urged to contact the Sector Charleston command center by calling 843-740-7050.

It is unknown if the boat broke free from its mooring and drifted out to sea or if someone took the vessel underway and fell overboard.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Diamondback and a helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Facility Charleston are en route to search the area in case someone is in distress.
