A teenager has been arrested for a fatal stabbing in downtown Charleston.

Mayor Joe Riley announced Monday evening that 17-year-old Terrell Smith, of North Charleston, has been arrested for stabbing of 18-year-old Brandon Bennett. Mayor Riley made the announcement at a vigil for Bennett in downtown Charleston, where family and friends of gathered to remember the teenager.

Last Wednesday, June 11, Bennett's father says he chased a man out of their house on Congress Street around 8 a.m.  When he returned inside, he found his 18-year-old son with a stab wound.  Bennett later died at the hospital.

According to a spokesperson for the Charleston Police Department, Smith was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Task Force in another state.

Smith was wanted on charges for murder, attempted murder, possession of a deadly weapon during a violent crime and first-degree burglary.
