7th annual remembrance ceremony held for the Charleston 9

CHARLESTON, SC - The 7th Remembrance Ceremony for the Charleston 9 will be conducted at the former Sofa Super Store site, 1807 Savannah Highway, on Wednesday, June 18, 2014.

The ceremony will begin promptly at 7 p.m. and will include a lineup of department personnel, the reading of the nine names and ringing of the bell, followed by bagpipes.

The community is invited to join the department and family members as we pause to reflect on the tragic loss of June 18, 2007.

Parking at the site will be limited during the ceremony. Visitors are encouraged to utilize various off-site parking in the immediate area.

Charleston fire personnel will initiate a watch at the flagpole of the memorial site starting at midnight and continuing for the 24 hours of June 18th. Members of the community are welcome to visit the site throughout the vigil.

Firefighter program teaches lessons 5 years after Sofa Super Store fire


Last year, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation released a video entitled "Charleston 9: The Ultimate Sacrifice". The documentary focused on the recovery of the Charleston Fire Department after the Sofa Super Store incident. The twenty-five minute documentary provides an overview of the department's changes and improvements since the fire.

    Investigators are searching for the person responsible for a possible hit and run. Shortly after 10pm Tuesday night, 59-year-old Peggy Ann Cain was found lying on the side of Highway 45 in Cross.
