Hartsville father who left daughter in hot car, trying to help prevent other fatalities

Posted: Updated:
A Hartsville man is trying to make sure other parents don’t make the same, fatal mistake he made.

“Sophia was one of those gifts.” Two months ago, Richie Gray’s daughter Sophia was a 13 month other happy little girl. “I can’t tell you why it happened. I can’t give you a reason.”

Gray can’t explain why he forgot to drop her off at daycare, and left her in a hot car as he went to work.

She later died.

He is doing something to make sure other don’t understand, first hand, the pain he has gone through. “I want everybody I can reach to be aware of this thing that everybody thinks can never happen to them. Because it can.”

Gray is passing out pink elephant stickers that say, “it takes a village” to parents.

The hope is, the sticker will be a visual reminder to check and make sure your child is not still in the car when you get out.

If that sticker only saves one little child’s life, it’s worth it. “I mean, it only took one to lose, to get this awareness. It only takes one to show that it works.”

Gray says only a higher power has given him the strength, “The only was I wake up in the morning and keep going it because of Him. Because of God… because I know one day I’ll see her again.”
