New program helps low-income and uninsured living east of the Cooper River

Posted: Updated:

A news program offers low-income and uninsured adults living east of the Copper River access to health care at no cost to them on Wednesday evenings.

The health care initiative, established by ECCO (East Cooper Community Outreach), is called Partners in HealthCare. The program is a collaboration between the Medical University of South Carolina’s College of Nursing and Department of Family Medicine, and Roper St. Francis Healthcare.

On Wednesday, members of the community, representatives from ECCO , and representatives with the hospitals were present for the program's dedication ceremony in Mount Pleasant.

Partners in Healthcare offers evaluations, treatment, lab services, and prescriptions. The services are by appointment only between 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at ECCO's facility located at 1145 Six Mile Road in Mount Pleasant. To make an appointment call: 843-416-7145.

Roper St. Francis supports the program through a grant, which helps pay for patient's lab work and radiology procedures.

Meanwhile, MUSC provides the facility and nurse practitioners.

According to ECCO, almost 20% of tri-county resident lack health insurance, which is the same percentage of uninsured South Carolinians – 765,000 people.
