Riley Benson joined the News 2 anchor team in May of 2022 leading weekend evenings as Weekend Evening Anchor before joining the News 2 Today team on the morning show as Weekday Morning Co-Anchor in 2023.
Since May of 2022, Riley has hosted News 2’s first political show, ‘2 The Point with Riley Benson,’ discussing local and national topics that matter to you and your family.
Riley originally joined the News 2 family in November of 2019 as an MMJ/Reporter covering daily news across the Lowcountry.
Since joining News 2, Riley has covered some of the area’s biggest events and stories including leading the station’s coverage of the six-week double murder trial of Alex Murdaugh and subsequent investigations, exclusively breaking the news Murdaugh would take the stand and testify. Riley also covered the May 2020 riots in downtown Charleston, the riots followed nationwide protests over the in-custody death of George Floyd. He also followed the discovery of Brittanee Drexel’s remains in Georgetown County — the teen who went missing while in South Carolina on spring break, along with hurricanes and winter weather that impact the Lowcountry.
Through ‘2 The Point,’ Riley has interviewed a number of regional, state, and national political leaders including U.S. representatives, Senators, former Governors and Presidential candidates.
Riley is an Ohio native and received his degree in broadcast journalism and mass communications from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio before moving to South Carolina.
He currently resides in Mount Pleasant. Although he’s not a South Carolina native, he spent many years vacationing at beaches in the Lowcountry with his family while growing up and is excited to continue to explore and learn more about Charleston and the tri-county area.
During his free time, Riley enjoys spending time at the beach, golfing, the local food scene and exploring everything Charleston has to offer. He’s also a huge sports fan and loves his Cleveland sports teams and Ohio State Buckeyes!
Riley’s favorite Charleston area beach is Sullivan’s Island but enjoys weekend trips to Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach.
