VIDEO: Ben Sawyer Bridge snaps from its moorings during Hurricane Hugo

SULLIVANS ISLAND, SC (WCBD) – Aerial video shows serious damage to the Ben Sawyer Bridge connecting Mount Pleasant and Sullivan’s Island.

The bridge, which normally turns from side-to-side to allow the passing of ships, broke from its cables during strong winds associated with Hurricane Hugo.

It was then the structure slipped to the side and tipped over into the river below.

Damage to the bridge made it very difficult for residents of Sullivan’s Island and the Isle of Palms to return home after the storm.
