BCSO tracking ‘porch pirates’ with GPS boxes

BERKELEY COUNTY (WCBD) – The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has some new toys to help crack down on porch thieves.

Deputies are using phony packages with GPS tracking devices in an effort to catch the crooks.

BCSO does not have a hard figure on how many packages are stolen each year since many of the cases go unreported as people file the claim through the website they ordered from. Sheriff Duane Lewis says they only caught thief last year with a smaller number, but BCSO has purchased more devices this year.

“If we catch just one to prevent somebody’s Christmas from being ruined – that’s the objective,” said Sheriff Duane Lewis, “that would be a blessing.”

BCSO has not said if they have arrested anyone through this year’s initiative yet.
