Berkeley Co. Sheriff’s deputy shot during traffic stop; Deputy in good condition


BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputy was rushed to the hospital early Friday after being shot during a traffic stop in St. Stephen.

Sheriff Lewis says deputies were called to a life-threatening domestic disturbance at a home on Pine Tree Drive. Deputy Cody Gooch, 28, is in good condition and recovering. His parents are with him at Trident Hospital along with his girlfriend.

The suspect, who had been shot, was apprehended a short distance away. The suspect has been identified as Calvin Lorenzo Middleton III, of 1055 Pine Tree Drive in St. Stephen.

Deputy Gooch was shot after he stopped a man who was trying to leave the scene. Chief Deputy Mike Cochran says the wounded deputy returned fire, immobilizing the suspect.

Both the deputy and the suspect were rushed to Trident Medical Center in North Charleston. A source with knowledge of the incident tells News 2 that the deputy is expected to recover and the suspect is in good condition.

Sheriff Duane Lewis called the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to launch an investigation of the shooting, which is standard procedure.News 2 will continue to follow this story as it develops.
