Berkeley County churches shocked by major increase in tax bills

MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCBD) – Berkeley County tax bills have been delivered now, and the reality of just how much taxes were increased on the storm water fee and the fire fee is hitting home at some local churches.

Several local churches found were shocked by the hike in their fees. One church in Goose Creek says they are paying a 2300% increase.

The amount of money they must pay the county in fees, between the storm water fee and the fire fee hike, Crowfield Baptist says their bill last year was $72.

The bill this year? $1692. That’s a 2350% tax increase in one year.

Over on highway 17-A, it’s not quite as bad, but still bad. Gateway Community Church owed $396 last year.

This year? $963. That is basically a 140% tax hike in a year.

Officials say you have to pay the bill now that it’s due, but Councilman Newell says he’s going to look into seeing if it’s possible to work out a payment arrangement for area-churches.
