Candles cause fire in West Ashley, fire investigators say


WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCBD) — Unattended candles caused a fire in West Ashley Thursday morning, according to fire investigators.

The Charleston and Saint Andrews Fire Departments, Charleston County EMS, and Charleston Police Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1600 block Evergreen Street at 5 a.m. on April 27.

First crews on scene found smoke and fire from one side of a duplex. The fire was contained to one side of the duplex.

Members of the Fire Marshal Division Fire Investigation Team responded to the scene to assess the incident. Investigators determined the fire originated in a bedroom area and was caused by unattended candles.

One adult and three children were at home at the time and evacuated prior to the fire departments arrival. No working smoke alarms were found in the home.
