CCSD elected official resigns following accusations of trying to blackmail the school district

A Charleston County School District administrator is stepping down, after being accused of blackmailing the school district, according to School Board Member Joseph Bowers.

Tony Lewis left a voicemail to a Charleston County School District administrator that surfaced with an individual claiming he would expose a sex scandal if the district would not give jobs to specific people. Lewis is the chairman of downtown Constituent District 20 School Board. Lewis along with his claims in a voicemail and text message are being investigated.

In the the nearly 3-minute long voicemail obtained by News 2, Lewis identifies himself in the beginning of the message. He tells the administrator the names of five different women and that they need to be given their job back at the school they worked at before. After saying their names, Lewis says, “cause what I heard today and the things I got and the conspiracy and stuff I heard and all the foolishness going with all those student there,” continues Lewis while getting louder, “with the staff – dealing with the kids – having the kids in their house and dealing with them sexually.”

News 2 reached out to local law enforcement and they say no such allegations have been reported or investigated involving the school Lewis referenced in the voicemail.

In a statement Charleston County School District wrote:

“We take allegations of this nature very seriously. We have turned this matter over to law enforcement, which will have our full cooperation and assistance. We have no further comment at this time.”

News 2 reached out several times to Tony Lewis, who in a brief phone call, said he needed to go over things with his attorney before speaking further on the matter.

Lewis resigned on Wednesday as the chairman of downtown Constituent District 20 School Board. He said he wasn’t blackmailing the school district, but rather reporting the incident. However, one of his board members read the text and said that it was clearly blackmail. CCSD officials say they respect the decision of District 20.

CCSD has no further comment other than they are fully cooperating with the authorities while they investigate Lewis and his claims.
