Charleston International Airport planning to build new concourse

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston International Airport is announcing new expansion plans to keep up with record growth.

The airport is expected to once again double the number of passengers it sees over the next ten years.

Charleston International is now planning to build a new concourse which will be built where the rental car lot is now and serve as an international concourse.

The airports executive director, Hernan Peña says it’s important to be pro-active.

“The important thing is that, in the airport business, you have to be pro-active. If you fall behind it is very hard to catch up when the growth is here,” he said. “Then that creates capacity constraints, more congestion of passengers, and we don’t want to do that. We want to look ahead and plan for the future to make sure that we continue to provide an excellent passenger experience.”

The new concourse is expected for completion before 2026.

Peña says they also have plans to expand the ticketing counters to make room for more airlines and add more fuel storage for the increase in planes.
